Supporting the self-management of distress experienced by young adults with a stoma due to IBD

Dr Benjamin Saunders, Senior Lecturer in Health , Keele University

Young adults, aged 18-35, who have a stoma due to IBD commonly experience distress due to body image concerns, sexual difficulties and lowered self-esteem. Early and effective support may reduce the risk that these young adults will develop depression. In our previous research young adults reported the desire for age-appropriate online resources to support self-management of stoma-related distress. In this presentation I will discuss ongoing research in which we are collaborating with young adults with a stoma, healthcare professionals and IBD/stoma charities, to co-produce a digital intervention to support the self-management of distress experienced by young adults following stoma surgery

Endoscopy Pre-assessment

Sara Santos, Senior Nurse Endoscopist, St. Thomas’ Hospital

In this session, while there will be an overview of patient pathways and endoscopy procedures, the focus will remain in Endoscopy pre-assessment. Endoscopy pre-assessment has been proven to increase patient safety, reduce cancellations and increase concordance with bowel preparation instructions. However, not all Endoscopy Units have the facilities and/or resources to set it as part of their routine service and thus, it becomes relevant to see an example of how pre-assessment can work, its benefits, most common challenges and how to address these.

2:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Types of Capsule Endoscopy and its Role in Pathways

Through case scenarios, one will explore its link as an alternative test to Endoscopy, in the most common patient pathways. An update regarding colon capsule, its role on the LGI Faster Diagnosis Standard will also be provided and challenges in setting up this service will also be provided.
